Breast Augmentation Surgery

Augmentation mammaplasty, commonly known as breast augmentation or breast implant surgery, is a procedure performed by a plastic surgeon to increase the size and volume of breasts. The procedure involves surgical insertion of saline or silicone gel based implants in the breasts. Breast augmentation is usually performed as a cosmetic surgery, but in some cases, it may be a part of breast reconstruction following mastectomy.
The surgery produces highly effective results in terms of improvement in the aesthetics of breasts as per the patient’s requirements. Dr. Thomas Fiala, an eminent double board certified plastic surgeon, provides breast augmentation and other procedures to patients in Orlando, Altamonte Springs, FL, and nearby locations.

Who is a Suitable Candidate?

A patient may be considered a suitable candidate for breast augmentation for one or more of the following reasons:

  •   The patient is bothered by the naturally small-sized or under-developed breasts.
  •   The patient wishes to enhance the size purely for aesthetics, even if the breasts are normal sized.
  •   The patient has suffered loss of breast volume following a pregnancy, nursing, or weight fluctuations.
  •   The breasts are unevenly sized.
  •   Breast tissue has been lost due to mastectomy or breast injury, requiring an implants surgery to restore breast appearance.

Dr. Fiala is an experienced plastic surgeon providing this procedure to patients in Orlando, Altamonte Springs, FL, and other regions.

Choice of Implants

The selection of breast implants will impact the final results of breast augmentation cosmetic surgery. The patient will usually have a choice between saline and silicone breast implants. Implant sizes are also available from 120cc to 960cc. The right combination of implant type, size, shape, profile and texture will ensure most effective outcomes as per the patient’s unique aesthetic needs.

Procedure

Breast implants surgery may be performed using general anesthesia or IV sedation, as per the surgeon’s decision in a particular case. The incisions may be placed underneath the breast crease, around the areola, around the navel, or in the underarm. In any case, an experienced surgeon will ensure that incisions are placed discreetly to minimize the appearance of scars.
Through the incision, the surgeon will create a breast cavity for the placement of implants. The implant may be placed below the chest muscle, or between the muscle and tissue. After the implants are placed, the surgeon will close the incisions with sutures. The entire procedure may be completed in about two hours in most cases. In some cases, the surgeon may recommend a breast augmentation surgery in conjunction with breast lift to achieve more comprehensive results.

Recovery

For the first week, the patient is likely to experience mild pain and discomfort in the treated area, which can be managed with pain medications. Within a day or two, the patient will be able to perform light activities at home. But heavy lifting and vigorous exercises must be avoided at least four to six weeks. Most patients will be ready to return to work within a week to 10 days following the surgery.
