Questions and Answers
Breast Lift FAQs

How is a breast lift different than a breast reduction?
The goal of a breast reduction is to make the breast size significantly smaller – so the symptoms that a heavy breast creates on the neck, shoulders and back are alleviated. A breast lift keeps the breast approximately the same size, but tightens up the loose skin of the breast, so the shape looks better, more youthful and uplifted.

Does a breast implant do the same thing as a breast lift?
Not exactly. A breast implant makes the breast larger, and fills up some loose skin. But if the patient has a low-set, droopy breast before placing an implant, afterwards the breast will be larger, but still at the same low-set position. If you have stretchy skin, the weight of an implant may actually make the breast shape worse over time by causing more stretching of the skin.

Are there different types of breast lifts?
Yes. The one we use depends on your breast shape. Women who have minimal droop of the breast can often get a good result with a lift operation that only has a circular scar around the nipple. On the other hand, women who have a very low nipple position and a lot of stretched out breast skin may require the traditional “inverted-T” shaped incision. Those in the “in-between” category may be able to get a good result with a “lollipop-shaped” incision. Dr. Fiala will advise you about the best choice at the time of your consultation.

Can I get breast implants at the same time as a breast lift?
Yes. Sometimes this allows us to use a smaller incision pattern.

I am a smoker. Can I have a breast lift?
Yes – provided you quit smoking for two months before surgery, to reduce the risk of smoking-related complications.

“I went to see you by a friend’s recommendation. She said you were the best and since I think she looks great, I trusted her. When I met everyone in your office, I also felt very comfortable.” -GW
