Questions and Answers
Breast Reduction FAQs

I wear a DD size bra. Am I a candidate for breast reduction surgery?
Yes, very likely. The goal of breast reduction is to make the breasts smaller, lighter and more proportional to your body size. Reducing the breast weight often improves pain in the neck and back, reduces grooving in the shoulders from bra straps, and improves posture, in addition to helping women feel less self-conscious about their chest size.

Can I pick what size I end up with?
To an extent. Some women just want a little removed, so they maintain a curvaceous figure, while others want to go down to a small C cup size.

Do you take the nipples off during surgery?
In the majority of cases, we use a surgical method where the nipples stay attached to you at all times. Only if a “nipple graft” technique is required are the nipples temporarily removed.

Are there scars?
Unfortunately, yes. Currently we don’t have a method for reducing the breast size and improving the shape without some scars on the skin. Despite this, breast reduction patients are some of the happiest patients in all of plastic surgery! Dr. Fiala uses the subcuticular suturing method to make the scars look as nice as they possibly can be.

Could you liposuction my breast instead?
Liposuction breast reduction has been used, but this method doesn’t work well in young women with thick, glandular tissue in the breast, as the glandular tissue doesn’t suction out well. In older women, the breast tissues are more fatty in nature, so liposuction could work – but the liposuction doesn’t correct the looseness of the skin, and can sometimes make breast droop look worse.

How long does the operation take?
Depending on your size and amount of asymmetry, breast reduction surgery usually takes between 3 and 5 hours. It is done under general anesthesia (completely asleep). An overnight stay in our recovery area is optional, if desired.

“I checked out others but they were never a consideration. You made me feel and truly believe that you sincerely believed in making a woman look beautiful and that it’s done correctly and to the best of your ability. You seem like a perfectionist and I appreciate that.” -LM
