What is a filler injection? These are FDA-approved treatments that can be used in fill in wrinkle lines, plump up lips, or add volume to certain facial areas.
What are the most popular products for this? Currently, the market leaders are products composed of hyaluronic acid (“HA”) gel. This is a naturally-occurring sugar molecule, and looks like clear gel. There are a number of formulations, including: Restylane, Hylaform, Captique, and Juvederm. All have the same basic ingredient.
What happened to Collagen? It’s still around – but the newer products last longer, and have fewer allergic reactions – so Collagen is not as popular as it once was.
How long does Restylane last? It depends on the amount used, the area treated, and the individual. Most people have a treatment effect for 4-5 months.
Are there any side effects to the treatment? Allergic reactions can occur – there is a 1 in 2000 risk. Bruising and swelling can occur – as with any injection. Other side effects are rare.
I want to get my lips treated. Is it painful? We have found that a combination of an anesthetic cream and a special form of nerve block works really well to make lip treatments comfortable.
I’ve heard about a new filler that is supposed to be permanent. What do you think? While it’s exciting to think about this idea, currently there are no injectable fillers in the USA that are both permanent and FDA-approved. Be careful – permanent fillers can have permanent side effects, which may not even start to show up until several years have passed.
