Eyelid Lift Plastic Surgery (Blepharoplasty) - Types of Lifts, Cost, Recovery, & Results

Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid lift, is a cosmetic surgery procedure that can significantly improve the appearance of droopy, tired looking eyes. The procedure may involve only upper or lower eyelids or both, and may also include correction of the problem of ptosis. Patients also typically like to combine eyelid lift along with other aesthetics procedures such as brow lift to achieve more comprehensive results.

As the procedure involves a sensitive area such as the eyes, it is important to choose a talented and highly trained plastic surgeon for eyelid lift. Leading plastic surgeon Dr. Thomas Fiala performs eyelid lift and other procedures for patients in Orlando, Altamonte Springs, FL, and surrounding communities.

Candidacy

Women and men who are bothered by the appearance of puffy upper eyelids or under eye bags, or those whose eyes appear tired and make the face look older, may make good candidates for eyelid lift cosmetic surgery. The candidate should be at least 18 years of age, but most candidates over the age of 30. The exceptions may be younger patients who have a genetic condition of baggy eyelids in their family.

Types of Eyelid Surgery

Lower Eyelid Surgery

This procedure may be performed for patients who need removal of excess fat deposits beneath the eye. In some cases, the plastic surgeon may redistribute excess fat in the hollowed areas under the eye where the face may have earlier looked sunken in. Loose skin may be excised to leave a smoother, firmer skin appearance above the cheek.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

This is a more common aesthetics procedure of the face, which involves surgical removal of excess fatty tissue and loose skin that are giving the droopy and inflated appearance to upper eyelids. Trimming away of excess skin from the upper eyelids can also address vision obstruction. The underlying muscles may also be tightened and repositioned in some cases.

Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty

This technique is usually recommended for patients who have relatively less prominent under eye bags. The procedure involves surgical removal of excess fat, but not any excision of the skin. Scarring is mostly invisible in this procedure because tiny incisions are placed inside the lower eyelid. Dr. Fiala receives patients from Orlando, Altamonte Springs, FL, and nearby areas for all types of cosmetic eyelid surgery.

Cost

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average cost of blepharoplasty in the US in 2014 was $2,874. However, this cost did not include the costs of anesthesia, surgical facility, and additional expenses. The overall cost of procedure may usually range from $4,000 to $7,000.

Recovery and Results

Eyelid lift will make the person gain a rejuvenated appearance around the eyes, and restore vision in cases where drooping eyelid skin caused obstruction. The procedure may involve a downtime of about four days to a week. Mild pain and irritation in the incision sites is expected in the first few days. Scarring will fade with time and eventually become inconspicuous.

 What is Juvederm Dermal Filler?
What is Juvederm Dermal Filler?

Every year millions of women and men in the US receive the benefits of facial aesthetics fillers to rejuvenate their facial appearance. These injectable dermal fillers are usually recommended for people who want to reverse the effects of aging from the face without cosmetic surgery. Juvederm is one of the more popular, FDA approved dermal fillers available today.

The skill of the treatment provider is as important as the quality of the dermal filler in order to achieve the desired outcomes. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Thomas Fiala provides Juvederm and other filler treatments in a state of the art environment. Dr. Fiala’s practice receives patients from Orlando, Altamonte Springs, FL, and surrounding communities.

Hyaluronic Acid Based Filler

Juvederm filler gel is based on hyaluronic acid, which is a natural substance found in the human body to hold the skin firmly. Hyaluronic acid is produced in the lab by biosynthesis, which makes it a biocompatible substance requiring no prior allergy tests for the patient. When hylauronic acid gel is injected directly into the depleted areas of the skin, it causes the skin to plump up.

The effects can be similar to facelift cosmetic surgery for a temporary period of time. One of the key benefits of the hyaluronic acid based composition of Juvederm is that the treatment becomes safer and longer lasting as compared to alternative fat or collagen injectables. Facial lines can be reduced and lips can be augmented with targeted Juvederm injectable treatment.

Treatable Areas

Juvederm injectable filler is designed to treat almost any part of the face, including wrinkles and creases around the nose, mouth and forehead. It can enhance the facial contours as well as mitigate the appearance of scars, such as the ones caused by acne.

Size and shape of the lips can be enhanced with Juvederm. Improvements with this filler are quite distinct, and may be combined with other surgical or non-surgical procedures. As an experienced plastic surgeon, Dr. Fiala recommends Juvederm to suitable candidates in Orlando, Altamonte Springs, FL, and nearby areas.

Procedure

A distinct feature of Juvederm is its smooth gel consistency, which makes the injection procedure relatively easier as compared to other dermal fillers. The Juvederm expert will use thinner needles and apply reduced pressure during the procedure. To minimize discomfort, the targeted area will be numbed with a topical anesthetic cream.

Juvederm will be injected into the mid to deep dermis, depending on the extent of corrected needed. The treatment can be completed in a single session lasting about 30 minutes. Juvederm is available in varying strengths so that the treatment can be customized according to the unique needs of a patient.

How does it Work?

When Juvederm gel is injected into the wrinkles, fine lines, furrows or sunken areas of the face, it will instantly replenish the hyaluronic acid that has been used up by the body. The treatment will also help to stimulate the production of natural collagen over time to produce sustainable results that can last for up to a year.

Facelift Surgery: Risks

Facelift cosmetic surgery is considered a relatively safe procedure, but certain risks are inherent to any surgical procedure. Patients should be aware of these risks in order to make an informed choice about facelift. It is equally important to choose a skilled and experienced plastic surgeon to minimize the risk of complications in facelift.

Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Thomas Fiala provides facelift and various other aesthetics procedures. Patients in Orlando, Altamonte Springs, FL, and surrounding communities have an opportunity to receive state of the art treatments at their practice.

Facelift Before and After Photo Gallery

Common Side Effects

While the impact of potential side effects will vary individually, but the common side effects involved in facelift cosmetic surgery are as follows:

Pain

Most patients will experience mild pain and discomfort in the first three to four days following facelift. This can be addressed with pain medications prescribed by the surgeon. Temporary numbness and skin discoloration may also occur, which will go away on its own.

Swelling and Bruising

Initial swelling will be pronounced, but it will begin to subside quickly as the body starts healing. Bruising will subside completely in about a week or 10 days. However, swelling will take several weeks to disappear completely in case of a traditional facelift surgery.

Scarring

When facelift is performed by an experienced plastic surgeon, the visibility of scars will be minimized because the incisions are placed minimally in discreet areas. Much of the scarring will be covered above the hairline, and most patients are unlikely to experience in any major concerns with scarring after a facelift. Dr. Fiala receives patients from Orlando, Altamonte Springs, FL, and nearby areas for facelift and other aesthetics procedures.

Common Post-Surgery Risks

Typical risks common to any surgery are as follows:

Anesthesia Reaction

General feeling of sickness and nausea are common after receiving anesthesia. In very rare cases, an allergic reaction to anesthesia may occur.

Hematoma

Hematoma refers to bleeding under the skin, which can cause painful swelling. This risk can be minimized by placing drains under the skin for the first week after surgery.

Bleeding

Uncontrolled bleeding may occur in rare cases. Prior medical tests to choose the right candidates can minimize this risk.

Infection

The risk of infection is inherent to any surgical procedure. Administering of antibiotics and keeping the surgical area as well as post-op recovery room sterile will cut down this risk.

Risks Specific to Facelift

Rare risks that are related to a facelift surgery include:

• Nerve injuries that can disturb the function of facial muscles.
• Poor healing, particularly in patients who smoke.
• Unsightly scarring.
• Temporary development of crusts over the incisions.
• Numbness or tingling sensation in the incision areas.
• Skin discoloration or skin loss in rare cases.

In the specific case of men, it may become necessary to shave behind the neck or ears in certain cases where the beard-bearing skin has been altered due to facelift surgery. Most of these risks are usually rare or temporary in a facelift.

Mommy Makeover Plastic Surgery Cost
Mommy Makeover Plastic Surgery Cost

Pregnancy is an exhilarating experience, but it can leave significant changes in a woman’s body. Certain effects such as stubborn fat pockets, loose skin, and separated abdominal muscles may require cosmetic surgery in order to restore the aesthetic appearance to a pre-pregnancy level.

During the initial consultation, the surgeon will discuss various aspects of the procedure, including its estimated costs. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Thomas Fiala provides mommy makeover and various other procedures to patients in Orlando, Altamonte Springs, FL, and surrounding communities.

Cost Factors

The dollar amount for mommy makeover surgery will usually vary from one patient to another. The type of procedures received, the fee charged by the surgeon, operating room costs, and location of the practice will all have a considerable impact on the overall financial impact of the treatment.

In any case, mommy makeover cosmetic surgery procedure can be more cost-effective as compared to individual surgeries because the costs of anesthesia, costs of surgical facility and surgeon’s fee will be incurred only once, and office visits can also be minimized.

Where the Practice is Located

The socio-economic environment in the region where a surgeon operates will have an influence on the costs of the procedure. The cost of real estate, size of the city, median income of the people, tax rates, and other factors will impact the average costs of most types of goods and services, including surgical procedures. The monetary amount of the mommy makeover procedure in Orlando, Altamonte Springs, FL, and nearby areas may not be the same as the cost in, say, New Jersey.

Surgeon’s Fee

If the plastic surgeon is highly experienced, qualified and commands a strong reputation in major procedures such as mommy makeover, their fees may be relatively higher as compared to a less accomplished surgeon. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), patients should choose the best surgeon for their needs, and factors such as surgeon’s fee should only be a secondary consideration.

Operating Facility

The mommy makeover procedure may take place at a hospital, ambulatory surgical center or a private surgical suite. Unique costs and benefits are associated with each of these facilities. Hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers are typically equipped with advanced technologies and emergency care. But private surgical suites may offer a more affordable choice and therefore a lighter dent into your bank account.

Anesthesia Costs

A mommy makeover will usually require general anesthesia. The procedure may be administered by an anesthesiologist or a trained nurse. The fee charged by both of them will differ. The patient may go by the surgeon’s recommendation in such cases if they are unable to make an informed decision on their own.

Pre- and Post-op Expenses

Apart from your bank account and this surgery, some additional financial concerns will have to be dealt with in a mommy makeover surgery. These may include the costs of:

• Pre-op office visits
• Post-op office visits
• Surgical bandage and drain
• Support garments
• Prescription medications
• Medical tests

Patients should also discuss their financing options with the surgeon’s office well in advance in order to make smooth payment arrangements for the procedure.

What is a Mommy Makeover Surgery?
What is a Mommy Makeover Surgery?

Pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding can take a toll on a woman’s physical figure in many cases. A mother has an opportunity to re-gain her pre-pregnancy figure with cosmetic surgery procedures. If she chooses individual aesthetic procedures, the improvement in the overall appearance may only be quite limited. On the other hand, a mommy makeover surgery can be a good choice for a comprehensive improvement.

A mommy makeover procedure will involve surgical treatment in certain pre-determined areas of the body that require enhancement. The surgery will address multiple issues such as loose skin, excess fat accumulation, and cellulite appearance in one go. Dr. Thomas Fiala is a board certified plastic surgeon providing state of the art procedures such as mommy makeover. Dr. Fiala receives patients from Orlando, Altamonte Springs, FL, and surrounding communities.

Who is a Good Candidate?

Any mother who feels the need to reverse or improve the adverse aesthetic impact caused by pregnancy and childbirth may make a good candidate for this procedure. Women who give a natural birth and those who undergo a C-section surgery will make equally good candidates for a mommy makeover cosmetic surgery.

However, the candidate should not have a plan for another pregnancy in the foreseeable future. The surgeon will also consider the overall health of the candidate, previous surgeries if any, and her personal aesthetic goals prior to determining whether mommy makeover is the most appropriate procedure in her case.

Procedure

The cosmetic surgeon will usually customize the mommy makeover procedure to meet the unique aesthetic needs of a patient. The procedure will usually include two or more of the following surgeries:

Breast Augmentation
• Breast Lift
• Breast Reduction
• Liposuction
• Tummy Tuck
• Body Lift
• Body Contouring
• Cellulite Reduction
• Stretch Mark Removal
• Non-invasive procedures

Breast augmentation or implant surgery is commonly included in a mommy makeover because the mother may experience loss of breast volume following pregnancy or breastfeeding. If the breasts droop significantly, breast lift surgery may be added to the mommy makeover plan. Some women may develop oversized breasts, which may necessitate a breast reduction procedure instead of implants.

Liposuction surgery is one of the common procedures in a mommy makeover. Liposuction can be used to improve body contours in a targeted manner with a less invasive approach. Experienced cosmetic surgeon Dr. Fiala provides mommy makeover and other procedures to patients in Orlando, Altamonte Springs, FL, and nearby areas.

Stretch mark and cellulite removal procedures are also commonly performed in a mommy makeover. Non-surgical procedures may sometimes be combined with surgery in order to make the overall procedure relatively less invasive. A detailed treatment plan will be prepared in consultation with the patient, which will accomplish the desired goals in a safe and effective manner.

Recovery

On average, a patient will take about two to three weeks before they can resume their normal activities. Heavy lifting of weights and strenuous movements should be avoided for about six weeks. The patient should follow the surgeon’s instructions diligently in order to minimize risk during the recovery.

How much does Botox Cost?
How much does Botox Cost?

Botox is one of the most popular anti-aging non-surgical aesthetic treatments for the face. This injectable treatment may be recommended for individuals who wish to avoid cosmetic surgery, but still want to find a solution to minimize facial lines and wrinkles. During the initial consultation, the Botox treatment provider will discuss various aspects of the procedure, including its estimated costs.

Dr. Thomas Fiala is a board certified plastic surgeon providing a wide range of surgical as well as non-surgical procedures, including Botox. Dr. Fiala will address all queries and concerns of the patient during the initial consultation, and help the patient make an informed choice. He receives patients from Orlando, Altamonte Springs, FL, and surrounding communities.

Average Cost

At Dr. Fiala’s practice, various facial procedures ranging from facelift cosmetic surgery to Botox non-surgical treatment are offered at competitive prices. Botox treatment, on average, may range from $350 to $500 for each treated area at the practice. Special offers may be available to make the treatment more affordable for patients who are on a budget.

In terms of cost per unit of Botox, the cost at Dr. Fiala’s practice may vary between $15 and $20 per unit. The number of injections that a patient may require will also influence the final cost of Botox treatment. One of the key advantages of receiving Botox injections at Dr. Fiala’s practice is that the treatments are performed under the guidance of experienced and board certified plastic surgeons, including Dr. Fiala himself.

A majority of practices offer Botox treatment at a flat rate cost, and only a few will break down the sticker price by units used per treatment. Flat rates for Botox may range from $300 to $1,000, depending on several factors. The rate per unit is usually around $15 to $20, and a single vial contains 100 units, which will suffice for four to five treatments. The limitation is that the vial must be used within a few hours of opening, and if the entire vial is not consumed, the rest of it may have to be discarded.

Cost Factors

When an individual is considering Botox treatment and making a comparison of prices, they should look at the price in relation to the quality of care and the professional credentials and reputation of the practice providing Botox treatment.

If the price discount offered at some place is abnormally high, it could be indicative of questionable treatment. Therefore, the patient should carefully evaluate the price against quality. Dr. Fiala provides Botox treatment to patients in Orlando, Altamonte Springs, FL, and nearby areas.

Insurance and Financing

Botox treatment for cosmetic purposes will generally not be covered by health insurance. However, the patient should consult with their insurance provider in advance to determine the coverage possibility. Allergan, Inc., the manufacturer of Botox, also offers guidance with regard to insurance over phone.

Most patients are eligible to get the Botox treatment financed from professional medical care financing firms. In some cases, the surgeon’s office may provide in-house assistance with financing. Major credit cards are also usually accepted at leading Botox practices and clinics.

Plastic Surgeons vs Cosmetic Surgeons

Plastic Surgery and Cosmetic Surgery: An Overview

Several people want to enhance their looks in any possible way, and reaching out to the Plastic Surgeon is their best answer. Often, they are not clear about the expert, whom they should approach, the Plastic Surgeon, or the Cosmetic Surgeon. The best way to understand this, is to know the definition and working of each surgeon’s expertise.

Plastic Surgery fundamentally means to mold or shape a body part using surgical procedures. It has various sub-divisions, which demarcate different specializations. The primary division of Plastic Surgery is the ‘Reconstructive’ surgery. It deals with the betterment of an abnormal body part, caused by an accident, birth defect or even cancer. Cosmetic Surgery deals with enhancing the appearance of a particular body part for aesthetic reasons, the reason why it is called Aesthetic Surgery as well. Hence, it is clear that Cosmetic Surgery is a part of Plastic Surgery.

Difference between a Plastic Surgeon and Cosmetic Surgeon

Since there is no specific residency program for Cosmetic Surgery, treating physicians come from different backgrounds. While the Plastic Surgeon primarily works as a Cosmetic Surgeon, an Otalaryngologist (head and neck surgeon) or a Dermatological Surgeon can also perform Cosmetic Surgery Aesthetics. In order to perform Plastic Surgery, the doctor has to undergo much more. At least two years of residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery after General Surgery Residency is the bare minimum for a doctor to use the term “Plastic Surgeon” for his career. A doctor who calls himself a “Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon” or “Aesthetic Plastic Surgeon” without having formal training, in fact is unethical and misleading. The general public do not really understand the meaning, and without proper knowledge, can face major problems post operation.

Choosing between a Plastic Surgeon and Cosmetic Surgeon

It is a known fact that Plastic Surgery is a highly specialized job. Mere knowledge about the human anatomy does not entitle the credibility to any doctor to perform Cosmetic Surgery Aesthetics on a body part. General Surgeons have experience in performing appendectomy, mastectomies, hemorrhoidectomies and thyroidectomies. On the other hand, Dermatological Surgeons treat more of skin disorders, and are not trained well to treat skin lesions. It is not advisable to even choose the ENT specialists or Gynaecologists for breast augmentations, liposuction and facial surgery.

A major part of the job of a competent Plastic Surgeon is having proper knowledge of his duties if and when the post-operative wound does not heal normally. It is important to take immense care while treating difficult wounds and non-healing ulcers. After all, surgery deals with one of the most unpredictable gifts of nature: the human body. A Plastic Surgeon is required to expect the unexpected and proceed accordingly to cure the patient. So, choosing a Plastic Surgeon for Cosmetic Surgery is the most prudent decisions for any kind of changes in appearances. A good Plastic Surgeon will actually be the better judge of performing Cosmetic Surgery Aesthetics.

Dr. Thomas Fiala, M.D. is an expert Plastic Surgeon Duo, offering Cosmetic Surgery Aesthetics. Residents of Orlando, Altamonte Springs, FL can be hassle-free when availing their services.

What is Botox Used for?
What is Botox Used for?

Botox offers a safe, standout, and proven non-surgical solution for facial aging. Ever since the Botox injection procedure was approved by the FDA for cosmetic reduction of fine lines on the forehead and between the eyes, it has continued to remain the most sought after anti-aging procedure around the world. Botox treatment is usually recommended for individuals who are reluctant to choose facial cosmetic surgery options such as a facelift or brow lift.

In 2013, Botox treatment was also approved for the cosmetic reduction of crow’s feet around the eyes. For many years, Botox has also been used for non-label aesthetic purposes such as reduction of lines at the base of the nose and other facial wrinkles and fine lines. Dr. Thomas Fiala is a board certified plastic surgeon providing Botox and various other surgical and non-surgical procedures to patients in Orlando, Altamonte Springs, FL, and surrounding communities.

Aesthetic Benefits

Botox injectable treatment is designed to temporarily eliminate or diminish facial wrinkles and lines by relaxing the underlying overactive muscles that form wrinkles. Apart from cosmetic benefits such as smoothing of frown lines and removal of crow’s feet, the FDA has also approved Botox for medical purposes such as reduction of eye muscle disorders.

Botox as a cosmetic treatment is not only used as a standalone treatment, but often also in conjunction with cosmetic surgery procedures such as facelift, brow lift or eyelid lift to optimize their impact. Results with Botox will show almost immediately, and the face can look younger and rejuvenated with this treatment.

A stellar and golden plastic surgeon, Dr. Fiala may recommend Botox to his patients for improving the appearance of various facial areas through reduction of the effects of aging. He receives patients from Orlando, Altamonte Springs, FL, and nearby locations.

Eyes

The area around the eyes is typically affected by dynamic wrinkles that are caused by repetitive muscle movement and facial expression. Such wrinkles respond well to Botox injectable treatment. The medication will impact only the muscle nerves, and not the nerves of sensation. Therefore, a patient will not experience a loss of sensation in the injected area.

Brows

Brows can get permanently wrinkled due to frowning, laughing or smiling. Botox treatment can dramatically improve moderate to severe frown lines between the brows, resulting in a positive enhancement of the face. Botox injections can also be beneficial for men who need to reduce deep furrows between the brows.

Forehead

Lines on the forehead can make the face appear old or haggard. Permanent creases on the forehead can occur due to aging. Botox can effectively relax the underlying facial muscles and cause the skin to become smoother and showing fewer wrinkles on the forehead. Forehead lines are horizontal, which makes the Botox treatment more effective in this area.

Jaw Contouring

Jaw contouring is one of the recently discovered uses of Botox. If the muscles of the jaw used for chewing are oversized, the patient may have a square shaped face. This condition can be treated with Botox to provide a more natural oval shaped face.

Vaginoplasty (Vaginal Plastic Surgery) Recovery

Vaginoplasty cosmetic surgery procedure is usually performed with the patient under IV sedation and local anesthesia. While it is primarily a procedure designed to enhance a woman’s sexual aesthetics, in some cases it may also be required to address pain, discomfort, and obstruction in performing certain activities.

During the initial consultation phase, the surgeon will discuss various aspects of the procedure, including its estimated recovery.

Immediate Post-Op Phase

Following vaginoplasty cosmetic surgery, the patient will be moved to a recovery area. Trained staff will monitor the patient’s vital signs and address any concerns or discomfort. In about one to two hours, most patients will be ready to leave for their home or nearby hotel. The patient should have someone to driver her back, and preferably stay overnight for general assistance.

At the time of leaving, the patient will be provided with written and verbal instructions for the recovery period, including recommendations for everyday activities and routine work. The patient will be encouraged to keep in touch with the surgeon during the healing process, especially in case of any abnormal signs or acute discomfort.

The plastic surgeon will usually perform the vaginoplasty procedure on an outpatient basis. The treated areas will be covered with bandage and dressings immediately after the surgery.

First Few Weeks

Mild pain and discomfort in the incision areas will be experienced by most patients in the first week. This can be address with pain medications prescribed by the surgeon. If only minor vaginoplasty has been performed, the patient may be able to return to her normal routine or go back to work in about three to four days. However, if a comprehensive procedure involving aesthetics enhancement as well as correction of anomalies is performed, the recovery period may be about one week to 10 days.

The surgeon may instruct the patient against the use of tampons, thongs, or g-string underwear for about a month. She will also be required to refrain from having sexual intercourse for about six weeks. Complete healing may take as long as three to four months. While regular activities can usually be resumed from the second week, but aggressive exercises and movements should be avoided for at least a month.

Risks

Vaginoplasty will entail risks similar to any other plastic surgery procedure. As long as the procedure is performed by a qualified and trained surgeon, the risk of complications is very rare. In any case, potential complications include infection, bleeding, alteration of sensation, and persistent pain in the treated area.

If the procedure involves labiaplasty through wedge technique, a minor scar can be expected. A part of the scar will be on the inside, while the remaining part will be on the outside, in the crease between the labia majora and minora. The scar is small and away from the vaginal opening.

 Vaginoplasty (Vaginal Plastic Surgery) Overview

Vaginoplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to improve the appearance of the vagina through a combination of surgical correction, fat reduction, and rejuvenation techniques. The appearance of the vagina may cause concern to some women in terms of sexual aesthetics or when it causes obstruction or discomfort in performing sexual or certain other activities.

Vagina may undergo changes due to developmental reasons, aging, or birth related trauma. If the labia are enlarged or torn, it may cause pain during sex, chafing, and generally make a woman feel self-conscious or unhappy.

What is a Vaginoplasty?

A vaginoplasty cosmetic surgery may include reduction in the size of labia minora and labia majora, or correction in the shape of the labia. A skilled surgeon may also combine innovative non-surgical techniques such as dermal fillers in some cases to rejuvenate the overall appearance of the vagina. It is important to ensure in vaginoplasty that enhancement in sexual aesthetics should not come at the cost of reduction in natural sensation in the area.

Therefore, such procedures should only be performed by highly trained surgeons who understand the vaginal anatomy. In some cases, apart from aesthetic improvements, vaginoplasty may also address functional issues such as repairing of torn vaginal tissue following childbirth.

Procedure

In many cases, the vaginoplasty procedure will be performed with the patient under local anesthesia and IV sedation. The surgeon will excise the targeted amount of excess tissue from the inner and outer vaginal lips as per the surgical plan decided in advance. Once the loose skin and tissue is carefully removed, the labia will be re-draped to create a desirable contour. The surgeon will use fine sutures to repair the tissue delicately.

The technique involved in labial reshaping will usually be the wedge method or the trim method. The wedge method adopts a more conservative surgical approach. Only the central element of the labia minor is removed in this technique, while the lower and upper portions of the tissue remain untouched. This is a safer and less invasive surgical approach to vaginoplasty.

In a few cases, the surgeon may choose to follow the trim method. This involves removal of a greater portion of the tissue to achieve substantive aesthetic improvement. This technique may be employed to address the appearance of excessively large labia or in cases where the patient wants correction of the discolored appearance of the labial edge.

Clitoral Hood Reduction

Clitoral hood reduction may be performed as a part of vaginoplasty. It involves reduction in the amount of tissue covering the upper portion of the vulva. A small upside down “V” of tissue is excised from the vaginal area in order to expose the clitoris a little more. The procedure may help to improve a woman’s ability to achieve sexual satisfaction.
